Pittsburgh Surgical Outcomes Research Center
Transforming the conduct of clinical research

Joshua B. Brown, MD, MS

  • Director
  • Samuel P. Harbison Endowed Assistant Professor of Surgery

I study the organization and delivery of prehospital care in trauma systems. I have a background as an emergency medical technician and prehospital care provider for eight years and subsequent training in general surgery, trauma surgery, and surgical critical care. I have additionally taken three years out of clinical surgical training to focus on developing clinical research skills in epidemiology and statistics, including obtaining a Master of Science degree in Clinical Research. As current faculty I am completing PhD work in Clinical and Translational Research focusing on advanced observational quantitative analysis, dissemination and implementation methods, and machine learning. This has enabled me to build on an already strong track record in prehospital trauma care outcomes research. The environment at the University of Pittsburgh is rich in senior mentorship, robust clinical experience, and substantial research support and infrastructure, particularly within the Department of Surgery. I have significant experience in large database management and robust statistical analysis of these resources.  I also serve as the Data Core Director for the Pittsburgh Trauma Research Center in which I administrate and facilitate projects using multiple sources of large databases in trauma at the national, regional, and local levels. I am the PI of the Prehospital Resource Organization and Delivery of Care in Trauma Systems (PRODCTS) lab where I mentor several medical students, general surgery residents, and data analysts in data management and statistical analyses. These experiences directly position me well to contribute to the Data Analytics Training for Health Innovation in Africa (DATHIA) project.
