Simmons Conference: “Understanding and Improving Outcomes in Cytoreductive Surgery and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (CRS HIPEC): Developing a Model of Prehabilitation for Disseminated Cancer”

December 1, 2020 -
9:00am to 10:30am

Event Description

Without treatment, survival for patients with peritoneal metastases remains less than 1 year. Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS HIPEC) can significantly increase survival for patients with advanced cancer. This intensive strategy comes at a cost, and complications, lengthy hospitalizations, and readmissions are common following surgery. Preoperative optimization through comprehensive prehabilitation offers an opportunity to reduce morbidity and improve patient experience.

Dr. Rieser will present her retrospective work examining outcome disparities within CRS HIPEC care delivery at UMPC. She will provide updates on the development of a multidisciplinary prehabilitation program for patients undergoing CRS HIPEC at UPMC.
