“Improving Outcomes in Cytoreductive Surgery and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (CRS HIPEC): Developing a Model of Comprehensive Prehabilitation for Disseminated Cancer”

Without treatment, survival for patients with peritoneal metastases remains less than 1 year. Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS HIPEC) can significantly increase survival for patients with advanced cancer. This intensive strategy comes at a cost as complications, lengthy hospitalizations, and readmissions are common following surgery. Preoperative optimization through comprehensive prehabilitation offers an opportunity to reduce morbidity and improve patient experience.

Mentors: Drs. Mohan, Hall, Ongchin and Choudry

Eric Adams, MD Candidate, 2022

"Engineering Synthetic Control Systems for Adoptive Cell Therapy"

Adoptive cell therapies like CAR T and TIL have shown great promise in the treatment of certain malignancies. Unlike conventional therapeutics, these are "living drugs" that are typically only infused once, affording the clinician limited control over in vivo activity and pharmacokinetics. Our work focuses on engineering novel synthetic control systems for these therapeutic cells that will allow for granular clinician control and "tuning" of therapeutic cell activity in vivo via administration of small-molecule drugs.
